The Other Billy Bean, and Torey Lovullo

When I was a kid, I watched Torey Lovullo a lot with the AAA Columbus Clippers. He was trying to hang onto a playing career and crack the New York Yankees Major League roster before they were mighty.

Then there was Billy Bean – not the general manager of the Oakland A’s – but the first openly homosexual baseball player. I remember Bean pretty well from that 1993 Padres team I liked with Fred McGriff and Tony Gwynn. He was mostly a role player.

On MLB Network the other day, a really great story between the two was detailed. Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com has detailed this story and it’s one of the best reads I’ve come across in a long time.
