Mayo: MLB Executives say Alex Reyes is unanimous top pitching prospect in the game

Jonathan Mayo is the prospects guru of MLB Network and MLB.com. Last year, you might remember that he tabbed Corey Seager as the top prospect in baseball – this was done through MLB.com’s own rankings system which is derived heavily through talking to the front offices around baseball. All Seager did was go out and almost win an MVP award, and obviously Rookie of the Year in the National League.

This season, he’s talking early about fielding responses from some 19 front-office types around baseball. Mayo said tonight on MLB Network that it was a bit ‘unanimous’ when it came to the top pitching prospect in the game, with 10 or so that responded saying that it was none other than Alex Reyes of the Cardinals. Mayo cited the success Reyes had as both a reliever and starter as well as the obvious things like his pitch repertoire and power-arm.

It was a little bit more divided right now for the best hitting prospect, with Andrew Benintendi getting the nod over Yoan Moncada because of the success he’s already had at the Major League level.

And the Cardinals continue to have nice things happen to them. At least we own Reyes in one keeper league.
