Notes on Midseason Vegas Odds

My kind of post over at CBS’ Eye on Baseball. They’re talking about MLB odds at the mid-season point. Here’s some things of note:

  • Andrew McCutchen is 4/1 odds in Vegas to win the NL MVP. Joey Votto and David Wright are next at 9/2 odds. Bryce Harper jumps into the mix at 18/1 odds.
  • Mike Trout is 2/1 odds in Vegas right now to win the AL MVP. Robinson Cano and Josh Hamilton follow him up.
  • I’ve never seen an odd quite like this before, but R.A. Dickey is 13/10 odds to win the NL Cy Young.
  • James McDonald is 11/2 odds to compete for the NL Cy, and it’s funny because I just told a friend yesterday that I think that’s who will win it.
  • Look at those NL Central odds. If you believe in the pirates you can make some money right now, as they’re 5/2 odds to win the division. The Reds are 1/1 even and the Cardinals are 2/1.
  • The Nationals are 10/13 odds to win the NL East. The New York Mets 15/2 is starting to jump out at me.
  • The Nationals and Giants are favorites to win the NL Pennant and represent their league in the World Series at 9/2. Next is the Reds at 11/2. Then you’ve got the Dodgers, Braves, Cardinals, and Pirates in a pack.
  • The AL Pennant is Yankees, Rangers at 5/2 odds to win it, with Angels (6/1), Tigers (15/2), White Sox (10/1), and Rays (10/1) rounding out that group.
  • Favorites to win the World Series: Yankees (9/2), Rangers (5/1), Giants (11/1), Nationals (11/1), Angels (11/1), with the Reds and Tigers (11/1 each) coming next.

Everyone needs to remember that the Cardinals were 999 to 1 odds at one point last season. These odds should come close to confirming things you felt good about heading into the season, or to give you a preview of the field of teams who could square off for the title in October. Nothing more, nothing less.
