Justin Upton continues to mash

Justin Upton is only 21 years old, and last night he hit his career high 20th home run of the season at Citi Field in a 9-6 loss to the New York Mets. He’s also added 15 steals in 18 attempts.

Upton has been on an absolute tear the past few months. We know because he’s on our fantasy team and on a nightly basis we’ve been watching him fill the stat sheet for us.

In the last 9 games, he’s hitting .441 with 4 home runs and 11 RBI. Since April 26 when he was hitting below .200 he is hitting at a .316 clip.

Upton is the type of player that makes us want to get the MLB Extra Innings package some how. He plays in Arizona so you might get to see him by chance once or twice a year if you own cable.

He’s also the type of player that Arizona should be looking to buy out as far as arbitration years go. What else do you want as far as faces of the franchise go? Here’s a kid you draft #1 overall and at 21 years of age he’s showing that he’s Superman in baseball cleats. Arizona should scramble (and by scramble, we mean get that new long term contract ready yesterday) to sign Upton to an 8 or 9 year deal. If you’re going to overpay for one player, let it be this guy.

With all the other things that have gone on this baseball season that have been less then desirable, Upton is a breath of fresh air and a true joy to watch develop.
