In the first ever Yankees-Red Sox battle at New Yankee Stadium, Jon Lester struck out ten batters and was spotted a 4-0 lead on the strength of a Mike Lowell home run among other big hits. The Yankees battled back during several instances in this game, including 2 home runs from Mark Teixeira and one from Johnny Damon, but in the end Jonathan Papelbon struck out Robinson Cano with the bases loaded to seal the victory for the Sox who have won all four contests against the Yanks this season. The game did not wrap up until after 1:00 AM eastern time due to a rain delay that lasted several hours.
Admit it: you were ready to write off the Indians season on May 4. Just when you thought the Indians were dead, they go and pull off a nice win like this over a quality team on the road. Rafael Betancourt got the win in this game; a game that saw Matt LaPorta get his first big league hit and home run in one swing of the bat. Josh Barfield and Grady Sizemore got the big hits in the top of the 12th that put the Indians ahead for good, and Jensen Lewis earned the save for Cleveland. This is the kind of victory that could get the Tribe rolling.
Francisco Liriano was “Lights Out” again last night. He went 7 and 1/3 innings striking out 9 hitters to earn his first win of the season. Denard Span had four hits for the Twinkies while Micheal Cuddyer had two knocks and 3 RBI in the winning cause. Miguel Cabrera did touch Liriano for a home run that momentarily tied the game at 1, but the Twins broke it open shortly after that.
Ryan Howard hit a grand slam and scored two runs while Jayson Werth homered and drove in another run. Kyle Lohse loses his first game of the season while Joe Blanton wins his first. This game had an overshadowing storyline putting the score secondary, with Rick Ankiel leaving the game after crashing into the centerfield wall after making a catch.
The Rays continue to be a puzzling team to figure out. After handling the Red Sox in a weekend series they come out flat and lose to the Orioles at home. Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts carried the Baltimore offense, each homering and collecting multiple hits and RBI’s. Evan Longoria homered for the Rays in the losing effort. Something to keep an eye on: B.J. Upton went 0 for 5 lowering his average to .152 on the year. He might not be all the way back from his early injury.
