Yankees set to open New Yankee Stadium this afternoon
This afternoon the New York Yankees welcome the Cleveland Indians to their new palace and are set to begin a new era.
The whole place will be Monument Park today. That is the truth of the occasion and the romance for Yankee fans, a Yankee occasion like this with all the trimmings. The official opening of the new Yankee Stadium will be a monument to everything the Yankees are and everything they used to be and everything they still want to be.
It will be Ruth and Gehrig and Joe D and Mickey and Yogi, Whitey and Scooter. It will be Capt. Jeter and Mo Rivera and Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte. And it will be the new guys on whom all the Yankee money was spent over the winter, CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira. It will be all that, in one place, one grand, gaudy new place on a new side of 161st St.
