Carlos Pena homered and drove in 6 runs, while Pat Burrell and Jason Bartlett also went deep. Akinori Iwamura enjoyed a nice 3 RBI night at the plate, while Dioner Navarro and Gabe Gross also enjoyed multi-hit ballgames. Things got so bad that Nick Swisher (who also homered in the game) threw the final inning in relief (scoreless!) for the Yankees.
Fausto Carmona gave up 4 runs in 5 innings including a home run to Mike Jacobs as the Indians lost their 6th game in 7 to begin the season. Zach Greinke went 5 innings scoreless to improve to 2-0 on the season. The sound you hear out of Cleveland could be Eric Wedge’s head on the chopping block. He’s going to get Anne Boleyn treatment if he doesn’t start winning.
Ted Lilly went 6 and 2/3 innings for the victory allowing only a single to Garrett Atkins. Derek Lee, Kori Hill and Alfonso Soriano picked up multi-hit games to power the Cubs offense. The Cubbies are now 5-2 to begin the season and have won their last three ballgames.
This is going to be the story all year for Texas. They’ll score a ton of runs but still get beat in a game that could resemble a football score. The Orioles enjoyed a 5 run 4th inning and a 3 run 5th, and they had just enough to hang on. Aubrey Huff had 4 hits and 3 RBI. Felix Pie homered. Andruw Jones homered. George Sherril picked up his 3rd save of the season somehow.
The Phillies honored legendary broadcaster Harry Kalas by sending Washington to their 7th straight defeat to start the young season. Raul Ibanez hit his third homer of the season, Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino hit their first. Adam Dunn also homered for Washington, who demoted Lastings Milledge to AAA after the game. Jamie Moyer was the winning pitcher of record while Brad Lidge picked up his third save.
