Zack Wheeler was blowing Dodgers hitters away for five innings, and then somehow they got the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. Meanwhile, Alex Wood posted a quality start; matching Wheeler step-for-step.

Cody Bellinger needed this one. Wheeler made him look silly his first at-bat. Bellinger lined out hard to center his second trip to the plate. His third time up, he got in an early 0-2 hole. Then Wheeler made a mistake that would allow the Dodgers to win the game.

It was Bellinger’s 13th home run in what has been a confounding season for him. He’s plugging along with a chance to be where he needs to be with a hot stretch. This was a big swing that put the Dodgers at 39-35 on the year. Yasiel Puig also hit his 9th home run of the season in the ninth inning.

Kenley Jansen came in for a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out two. It was Kenley’s 19th save of the season.

Nice Friday night in the Big Apple. And tomorrow, Clayton Kershaw returns!
