The Rockies Won’t Talk Extension With Nolan Arenado Until After 2018

Well, this is disheartening.

The Colorado Rockies have one of the best young stars in all of baseball. Still, they’re in no rush to keep him in a Rockies uniform for the rest of his career.

Considered one of the game’s top stars at his position, Arenado refuses to let his possible free agency after the 2019 season become a distraction to a club that is coming off its first postseason appearance since 2009. Sunday morning, he made that clear.

“I don’t think anything’s going to happen until after the season,” he said. “We have a good team and our focus is on winning — as it should be — and that’s what everybody wants.”

This could really be that the Rockies don’t think they can keep Arenado from testing free agency to begin with. It seems a little odd that ‘the focus is on this year’ is the theme; you could still keep the focus on the upcoming season and give the fan base a feel-good sign that they’re going to have a cornerstone for a decade to come.

My guess is that the Rockies struggle to get something done with Arenado and talks remain quiet. I hope I’m wrong – I really like seeing guys remain with the team they were drafted with. Arenado is one of the best Rockies ever and shouldn’t play in another uniform.
