Dexter Fowler signs with St. Louis Cardinals (5-years, $82.5 Million)

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed outfielder Dexter Fowler to a five-year, $82.5 million dollar contract.

To some, this might seem like an overpay. However, this strikes me as a move that works out for the Cardinals. They always do seem to work out for the most part. Hell, I’m still shocked that Mike Leake went 9-12 last season with a 4.69 ERA. The mileage they got out of Jedd Gyorko more than cancels out Leake’s poor performance in my mind.

Fowler will be 31 in March before the season begins – again, throw age out the window and don’t worry about Fowler approaching his mid-30’s in the meat of this contract – no one gets more out of aging veterans than the Redbirds. Absolutely nobody.

Fowler posted a 4.7 fWAR last season for the Cubbies, without any real eye-popping numbers. Steamer has him as about a two win player in 2017. But he’s going to be a Cardinal. He’ll be more than fine. And rich to boot!
