Jason Heyward’s RBI double was the only offense the Braves could muster through the first 8 innings of this ballgame off Ryan Dempster. In the bottom of the 8th though, Chipper Jones showed his flare for the dramatics as he hit a 2-run homer off John Grabow to left-center field that would give the Braves the lead for good. Billy Wagner entered the game in the 9th inning and struck out the side, largely with 97 MPH fastballs. Early on, how can you not root for this group? They’ve got a little bit of everything with Cox’s final season, Heyward, Chipper, and Wagner’s comeback.
Curtis Granderson saved the Yankees in the 10th with a home run to right field off of Jonathan Papelbon that would give the Yankees the series victory. Chan Ho Park picked up the victory with 3 innings of shutout baseball in which he allowed only one hit and zero walks. Mariano Rivera closed out the 10th for his second save.
Rays 4, Orioles 3
Evan Longoria homered for the second consecutive evening. This one was a two run homer that put the Rays out in front. Longoria added another RBI later in the game that would make the score 4-2. Although Rafael Soriano allowed a run in the 9th, he had enough to lock down his first save of the season. Matt Garza was the story. He threw 8 innings of one run baseball, striking out nine to earn his first victory.
Kelly Johnson homered twice and collected three hits. Justin Upton hit his first home run of the season to provide an insurance run. Scott Hairston homered and drove in three runs in a losing effort for the Padres. Ian Kennedy went five innings striking out 8 Padre hitters. The Dbacks earn a series win to open the year.
Fausto Carmona gets the win last night in Chicago as Matt LaPorta delivers with a crucial and late run scoring knock that evened the series at 1 a piece. The Indians waited out Jake Peavy who went five innings allowing three runs and striking out five. Chris Perez worked the 9th inning for his first save as Indians closer as Shin Soo Choo added two hits and two runs.
