Rafael Soriano got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 9th inning after going 3-0 to Miguel Tejada with 2 outs. Kelly Shoppach doubled with 1 out in the 9th to put runners on second and third, and two batters later Carl Crawford singled to right field to score the winning and go-ahead runs. Evan Longoria added a 473 foot home run in this game off Kevin Millwood.
Barry Zito went six innings of scoreless baseball, walking only one and striking out five. Over the final three innings the Giants pen would not surrender a run. In the early going, the Giants are showing that they’re built around pitching and and Astros are showing that their lineup will make it a long year. Aubrey Huff added two hits and an RBI for the Giants.
Robby Cano had two hits including a home run that provided an insurance run after a gaffe by Marco Scutaro allowed the Yankees to break a 4-4 tie in the 8th inning. Victor Martinez homered, doubled and drove in three in the losing cause for the Sox. Mariano Rivera picked up his first save of the season Alfredo Aceves picked up his first win of the year.
Mark Ellis singled in the bottom of the 10th to score Eric Patterson and give the Oakland A’s their first victory of the young season. Dallas Braden and Ian Snell went 7 and 6 innings respectively, each allowing one run over their innings worked. Braden struck out 10 Mariners and walked only one. Edwar Ramirez picked up the win for the A’s. Kurt Suzuki had the only homer in this game.
