The truth shall set you free; Papi

I have to say, by all accounts that I’ve heard, David Ortiz is a great guy. When my mother was in Las Vegas last year in the offseason, she saw Papi at a casino and told him what a huge baseball fan that I was. Without even her asking for an autograph, he asked her if he could sign something for me. That instantly made me a fan of this big teddy bear that hits professionaly for the ‘Sawks from Boston. The fact that he wants to stick up for a scum-of-the-earth toad like Bonds makes me sick.

In an interview published in the Boston Herald today:

“To hit the frickin’ ball, the guy makes it look easy, but it ain’t. I don’t know how you can have that swing, consistently. I don’t know how steroids can do that,” Ortiz said. “There are supposed to be guys using steroids in the game, and there’s nobody close to Barry Bonds. What’s that mean? He was using the best (expletive)? Know what I’m saying?”

“He deserves respect,” Ortiz said Sunday in Minneapolis. “People are not going to give it to him because of all the bad things running around, this and that, but people need to realize. I’ve heard a lot of different things about Barry Bonds, but people should just admit it – this guy’s a bad (expletive).”

“If you go to the hitters, and ask them, ‘A), What do you think about 744 home runs?’ and b), ‘You know how hard it is to hit a baseball. What do you think about that?’ The bottom line is, I don’t care what people say.”

Now, I understand both sides of the coin here, but Papi should stick to torturing fastballs into the Boston night, not arguing whatever point he was trying to make. I’m not sure what kind of shit he’s trying to sell here, but it would appear to me that point a. was that Bonds wasn’t ever proved to be using steroids; or that he isn’t on them at all, and point b. was that even if he was on steroids what does it matter, he’s got 744 career homers and steroids can’t teach your swing. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense with me and Papi isn’t scoring any points by doing what I think he was trying to do; which is rub Bonds’ johnson a little bit so that they can maintain a friendship.

Papi should be smarter than this; a man like Bonds does not want friends, does not have friends, and does not need friends. Not to mention the fact he’s guilty as sin.

Papi also went on in the interview to cast a shadow of doubt in those (including me) that don’t think he’s ever taken steroids.

“I tell you, I don’t know too much about steroids, but I started listening about steroids when they started to bring that [stuff] up, and I started realizing and getting to know a little bit about it,” Ortiz told the Herald. “You’ve got to be careful. … I used to buy a protein shake in my country. I don’t do that any more because they don’t have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I’m off of buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican. But it can happen anytime, it can happen. I don’t know. I don’t know
if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it.”

If people want to look at that as a confession that Papi has used steroids, I’ll for one say, don’t count on it. He’s simply covering Bonds’ ass and kissing Bonds’ ass and that is the only thing Ortiz is guilty of.
